Burnout Is Not a Badge of Honor: A Nurse's Honest Take

What 30+ years in healthcare taught me about rest, recovery, and reclaiming yourself.

For most of my career, I wore my exhaustion like a uniform. The double shifts, the skipped lunches, the patient care that never stopped because the need never stopped. I was a registered nurse, a nurse leader, a person people depended on. And somewhere in the middle of all that giving, I stopped checking in on myself.

I am telling you this because I know you know this story. Maybe you are living it right now.

Burnout is not a personal failure. It is a systemic pressure that lands most heavily on the women who care the most. And it is time we stopped calling it dedication.

What Burnout Actually Looks Like

Burnout does not always look like collapse. More often, it looks like competence with no joy left behind it. You are still getting things done. You are still showing up. But something has gone quiet inside, and you cannot remember the last time you felt genuinely good about your work or your life.

The Healthcare Worker's Particular Burden

Nurses and healthcare professionals are trained to put others first. It is baked into the culture, the ethics, and frankly, the job description. But decades of research confirm what experienced nurses already know: caregiver fatigue is real, it is cumulative, and it does not resolve on its own without intentional intervention.

Three Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me

  • Rest is not a reward. It is a requirement.

  • Your value is not measured in your output.

  • Asking for support is the most professional thing you can do.

What Recovery Actually Requires

Recovery from burnout is not passive. It requires you to make a decision that your well-being is non-negotiable. It requires structure, support, and someone in your corner who understands both the professional demands and the personal cost. That is exactly what my brand is built around.
